The debate over whether an electric toothbrush or a regular manual toothbrush is better may never be resolved because both have their haters and their ardent fans.
One thing is clear though, whichever one is more likely to encourage you to brush your teeth regularly is best.
Both types of toothbrush are effective, but they’re only as effective as the person using them.
So which is better? Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of each.
Manual Toothbrushes
The regular toothbrush has been around for a lot longer than electric toothbrushes, and if your technique and your enthusiasm are both steady, there’s no reason to stop using it.
However, if you’re less than inspired by a toothbrush that doesn’t move by itself, you’re less likely to brush as often as you should, and it’s easy to overdo it with harsh brushing that can damage your gums.
The manual toothbrush still has a lot going for it though, including:
- They’re cost effective and available almost everywhere
- They never run out of power and you don’t need to plug them in
- They’re available in a rainbow of colours with different sized heads to suit everyone
- They’re cheap enough that you can have several if you travel or you’re away from home often
- They don’t use batteries or electricity so they’re more eco-friendly
Electric Toothbrushes
Electric toothbrushes are the only choice for some people and they are superior at brushing teeth if your technique isn’t so good.
However, they are a lot more expensive, and even the replacement heads are costly, assuming you can even find the right ones for your unit.
They have variable speeds and they rotate and vibrate, which is more efficient at removing plaque and bacteria for better oral hygiene. However, they’re only as good as their power supply. If you run out of batteries or can’t recharge your electric toothbrush you’re left with an expensive and cumbersome manual toothbrush.
You also need to remember to pack a travel adapter if you travel overseas and need to recharge.
On the plus side:
- Kids love them and you’re more likely to get them to brush regularly and properly with an electric toothbrush
- They have superior cleaning power if you have braces
- They’re excellent for older people or those with limited dexterity
- Some have built-in timers so you know when you’ve brushed for long enough
Good Oral Hygiene
Whichever one you choose, be sure to use it at least twice a day, and preferably after every meal.
Young children might love electric toothbrushes but it’s better to teach them to brush properly with a small, manual toothbrush first for better control.
